In California there are 615,000 acres planted to winegrapes. Of those, 87,282 are Chardonnay and a mere 314 are Roussanne*. Now take a sip of this wine. Suddenly those figures make absolutely no sense. Roussanne is the wine you’ve been looking or. It’s spicy and bright, not oaky and buttery. It’s the wine you keep hoping Chardonnay will be but never is.
For 2021 we did a few things differently. For one, we did not foot-tread the grapes. “Il n’est pas nécessaire,” according to our new winemaker. In the past, our fear was that breaking the seeds would make the wine astringent. “Ne sois pas ridicule,” he said. Message received.
Aromas of honeydew, pear and apricot. The mouth is crisp with flavors of yellow peaches, Comise pears and Jonagold apples. Then apricots and nectarine. The finish has Meyer Lemon and allspice.
